Oil Spill In The Gulf Of Mexico

The story about the continuing oil spill in the Gulf is everywhere as well it should be. The environmental disaster that's taking place promises to devestate the Gulf coast states, poison valuable fishing, shrimping and oyster habitats and impoverish those that depend on them for their livelihoods.

The oil slick in the Gulf was the focus of a good deal of my radio show today. It shows the folly and some of the dangers inherent in relying on fossil fuels for all our energy needs. There are so many aspects to this story and the consequences so seemingly dire that there can be little satisfaction that it may push us in the right direction vis-a-vis clean energy. You also have to wonder if the guilty parties will ever pay the consequences for their incompetence.

Here's Rush Limbaugh's insane take on what may have caused the disaster in the first place. It kind of makes one wonder if maybe Rush is suffering from Mad Cow disease. Not as a result of all the beef he's clearly indulged in over the years but rather from all the red meat he's had to throw out to his listeners day after day. It's clearly having an effect on his sanity.

Sanctiholes!

For anyone who has visited our Canadian site, you'll know that I've been all over Stephen Harper for his stance on maternal health in developing nations and calling him an Assalogue, a not-so-charming mix of ass and idealogue. Now as full of crap and as mean spirited as I believe him to be, he could never match these people. Imagine if you can people who would keep information about birth defects from women to prevent abortions.

Imagine people who would force a woman who was raped to look at the ultrasound of the fetus and then make them pay for the costs of the ultrasound.

In the US more than 60% support Roe V Wade, or choice. From the moment they lost the PR war over this issue the anti-abortion zealots have gone stark raving bonkers and show no signs of letting up any time soon. You'd think freedom of choice would be answer enough to their arguments. Or even the belief in the all seeing and knowing invisible guy in the sky who A) knew this would happen B) make allowances for it C) regard it as his business and not that of small minded puny humans.

Evangelical Scientists: Biggest Oxymoron Ever?

These "evangelical scientists" say they are 99.9% sure that these little bits of wood are from Noah's Ark! How would they know the age of those bits of wood? They don't believe in carbon dating and they think the Earth is 6,000 years old.

It is a lot more likely that these are bits of wood from the S.S. Minnow. This, by the way, was on the front page of Fox's science/tech page yesterday. Maybe this is not the age of stupid as I call it most days on my show. Maybe it's the age of Gilligan!

More on the Great Pacific Garbage Patch

Expect me to keep posting and providing information on the great Pacific garbage patch as the subject is too important to ignore. The fulll extent of this problem isn't completely known yet but there are reports of garbage patches in other oceans now and this plastic is making its way ito the food chain.

And this lecture on the subject of what happens to the 100 billion pounds of thermo plastic pellets produced anually is from the good people over at TED and describes in some detail the extent of the problem.

"No Underlying Merit to the Transactions"

In this video, Billl Clinton is not as sure or as angry as I am about the tranactions Goldman Sachs undertook to line their pockets with billions of dollars of investors (unwtting dupes) money. He makes the point however that regardless of how you feel about what Goldman Sachs did there was no merit to the kind of transactions they were engaged in. I agree, these kinds of transactions shoould not be happening iin the 1st place. New laws and new regs would be the right place to start fixing this catastrophe.

Goldman Sachs Scum Engage in Delay Tactics

There are no words to express the level of disgust I feel for the people in this video below (courtesy of TPM)! The news about Goldman and their practices has been nothing short of stunning, Excerpts of hundreds of internal Goldman documents released by the committee show that Goldman created and sold complex investments backed by risky home loans. Then, Goldman also bet against those investments by buying a type of insurance that would pay out if the underlying home loans went bad.

There is ample proof that the investment bank misled investors by selling assets that it knew were junk and actively bet against them. One of these assets, known as Timberwolf, was a collateralized debt obligation that allowed investors to bet on subprime mortgages. According to emails obtained by the committee, Goldman executives acknowledged that Timberwolf “was one shitty deal,” but the firm continued to sell the asset to investors.

After the hearing Sen. Carl Levin, head of the investigating comittee said unequivocally, "The evidence shows that Goldman repeatedly put its own interests and profits ahead of the interests of its clients."

These people should be imprisoned with no opportunity for bail but instead they are kings of the freaking world. This has to change and soon or eat the rich may soon be a menu option instead of just a bit of snarky graffiti on a concrete wall. I can't imagine this not causing outrage as it permeates the conciousness of public.

Stay tuned.

More on the Giant Trash Heap in the Pacific

This is a photograph of floating waste from the Pacific gyre. Tangled plastic, rope and various aquatic animals called a"ghost net" drifts in the Eastern Pacific Garbage Patch: a loose, free-floating trash heap that some estimates say is twice the size of Texas.

Go see the National Geographic report of the giant ocean trash vortex floating in the Pacific Ocean. There are similar reports of another in the Atlantic Ocean.

Variations on a Theme

If you've been over to the NMPCanada site you might notice a bit of a trend. Anyhow, I'd like to dedicate this to the racist teaparty people who have made me want to pukkke since their inception. Enjoy!

The Other Problem with Carbon Dioxide

Climate science deniers do everything they can to muddy the waters on the current state of climate science. From pretending that hacked e-mails from East Anglia constitute a scandal worthy to put the word "gate" as a suffix to just plain making stuff up. Strangley there is rarely a mention of ocean acidification, arguably one of the farthest reaching consequences of the pollution we are spilling into the atmosphere.

One of the major problems with all the excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is that the oceans, which serve as a carbon sink, are becoming increasingly acidic. In fact they have become 30% more acidic over the past 250 years after being relatively stable for the previous 20 million! So reports the NRDC (Natural Resource Defense Council) in an alarming article on the current and future state of our oceans and their delicate ecosystems.  They caution that:  A more acidic ocean could wipe out species, disrupt the food web and impact fishing, tourism and any other human endeavor that relies on the sea.

Go over and read the whole piece and then try to remain indifferent about the lack of any progress on doing something concrete about climate change. It should be a no-brainer but maybe the no-brainer is us.

Astroturfing!

Something much discussed in the blogosphere is the phenomena called "astroturfing." That is creating fake grass roots organizatuions so as to create the false impression your cause has resonance amongst the great unwashed. In this clip the lovely and extremely talented Rachel Maddow lays it all out so you can witness one of the worst progenitors of this kind of crap, that the MSM is only too happy to advance on behalf of their corporate masters.

Garbage Dump in the Pacific

This report by BBC reporter Simon Reeve is alarming and revolting and yet more proof that we in the west need to stop ignoring major ecological problems, take concrete steps to clean it up and change our habits.

If this doesn't anger, frighten or alarm you I suggest a visit to the doctor to see if you still have a pulse.

Follow Up To Collateral Murder

Democracy Now's next day interviews . Shocking eye witness report!

Viewer discretion is advised

So before something else horrible dissappears down the memory hole, let's review the fallout from this video where American soldiers behave like sociopaths. They beg to be allowed to "engage"  a group of civillians in the street, none of whom is threatening anyone or anything, and laugh at their plight and their subsequent deaths, all from the comfort and safety of their helicopter.

The fallout? Nothing.

Some people looked at it, were angred and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates got mad at the Wikileaks people, but nothing happened. He said context was needed to properly understand what actually happened in the video and that it was like looking at the war through a soda straw. And then nothing happened. The soldiers weren't reprimanded for what happens in that video, no one was held accountable and the American media did its' level best to report on the incident once and then ignore it completely.

This is why the MSM is not to be trusted with any story of import. It's no longer their job to function as the 4th estate. They are there to entertain, gloss over unpleasantness and spew the corporate or government line while getting paid fabulously themselves. Millionaire journalist, is an oxymoron.

So look at what Democracy Now puts together here and remember it when you're reading your newspaper tomorrow and there's barely a mention of the ongoing occupation of Iraq - which is now in its fun-filled 8th year! And then ask yourself, what are the Americans there for again?

Who are the terrorists?

China Embraces Electric Car Market

Whenever the topic of Climate Change arises, with even my most skeptical of friends, there's always common ground to be found on subject of green economic opportunities. Sadly we can never come to an understanding as to why corporations haven't rushed to take the lead in these potentialy profitable, new green technologies.

Climate Progress points out that reducing oil imports saves the country billions and these technologies  ...have the potential to create 900,000 new jobs in the US for very $100 billion decrease in oil imports.

The solutions to climate change—ranging from renewable energy, to high-speed rail, to smartgrid investments, to sustainable biofuels—depend more on domestic resources, and also use more labor per dollar invested, than do fossil fuel alternatives

China is moving aggressively to capture leadership in solar, wind, high-speed rail, and other key clean energy solutions. But as recently as 1995, the US was the technology leader in wind and baseload solar”—solar thermal. US utilities today are purchasing these technologies from China, Denmark and Spain. By reassuming technology leadership, and adopting a policy framework to support clean, homegrown energy industries, the US can create new jobs by selling into an emerging, massive global market.

Well, here's a warning: Keep lying, dragging your feet and making excuses for not jumping on board in earnest and you will put western economies at a huge disadvantage to compete in world markets. An example is on display tomorrow at the Beijing Auto Show, where 95 electric cars will be unveiled. What's important here is that China surpassed the US in 2009 as the world's largest market for automoblies and many of the cars on display will come from a host of new and influential Chinese automakers including, China's biggest carmaker, SAIC Motor Corp, is expected to debut its E1 electric concept car and also present a hybrid version of the Roewe 750, which will be in mass production later this year.

If you want to capture those markets and those consumers you have to lead. By allowing corporations and their shills to obscure the science of Climate Change and prevent concrete steps from being taken you are effectively shipping jobs overseas and taking the very food off the tables of North Americans.

Happy Earth Day!

We have met the enemy and they are the corporations and those who shill on their behalf against stricter environmental laws and standards. It is not about saving the planet as George Carlin pointed out long ago, it's about saving ourselves. It's about preserving the Earth's natural beauty and protectinng delicate ecosystems which have given us life on this planet. So maybe if we start think of it as enlightened self-interest then there's a hope that we'll start moving towards goals of sustainability and reducing toxic emissions.

There are More Reasons to be Cautious...

about what we put into our environment than just worry over Climate Change.  In this story from the Guardian we learn that a new study reveals more than 80% of the male bass fish in Washington's major river are now exhibiting female traits such as egg production because of a "toxic stew" of pollutants. That should be enough to frighten anyone who reads it and can understand the future implications of what this holds for the numerous and delicate ecosystems around the world.

Sadly, half the people who see this will ignore its meaning.

There was a time when conservatism meant caution, study and a reliance on empirical data, this is no longer the case. Conservatism now means shilling for corporate polluters, denying scientific studies and any calls to caution about how we treat our environment are loony, left-wing, tree-hugging examples of liberalism gone crazy.

I beg to differ. As much I'd like to claim them for my own political side of the spectrum, these are human values and I cannot understand how this became a left/right issue. It's about our quality of life. Preserving the environment only enhances our enjoyment of life. Having corporations behave like good citizens and ensuring that they do their best to not leave toxic messes or stews that find their way into our bloodstream is a matter of our survival as a species.

Collateral Murder

CAUTION: Contains disturbing and violent footage.

This is the video released by the Wikileaks people that caused all the fuss. There is good reason to be disturbed by this. The act of soldiers flying around, looking for something to kill and finding it seems sociopathic. The US is going into its' 8th year of occupation in Iraq and is clearly not interested in winning hearts and minds regardless of what General Stanley McChrystal says.

Even Fox News...

Even Fox news covered the story the the scientists involved in to so-called "climategate" have been vindicated for yet a 2nd time. So for those playing catch-up, there was no malpractice by the Climactic Research Unit and there is no such thing as "climategate!" Now this may take a long time before it sinks into the consciousness of the general public and the climate change deniers know that. It's all about narratives and this one will no doubt live on for quite some time.

Build It Yourself

So over at my radio show this morning I decided to give my listeners a do-it-yourself morning news broadcast using the new media. I started with this story whose source was the Southern Poverty Law Center and the video was posted at Crooks and Liars but the original broadcast came from GoLeftTv's Ring of Fire http://bit.ly/aLMzW3 And here's lying Sarah, the wolf-killer, Palin, pretending not to call Obama anti-American while calling him anti-American http://bit.ly/anzIzi She's so clever!

And there's a story about the police looking for a teaparty leader who made not so veiled threat against hispanics on twitter http://digg.com/d31OS67 And CNN host, Rick Sanchez getting angry and getting it right http://bit.ly/bDe3rn Makes me very happy when a member of the MSM calls it like it actually is.

Over at Media Matters I found the "Limbaugh Wire" and played clips from his show yesterday to illustrate all the ways he lies and demagogues everything Obama does. There is no accomplishment of Obama's he does not seek to denigrate http://bit.ly/9BxSIs In one short day, he manages to call Obama delusional, power hungry, Nero-like and filled with admiration for the Chi-Comms (Rush's high-larious description for the Chinese Communists)! That's only one day's worth of hate from the over-paid cockroach.

No modern-day news broadcast would be complete without something from John Stewart and he can be found in Canada over at Comedy Central where they have a great store of his show archives. In this brilliant clip he covers Fox News and their attacks on the poor and the taxes they're not paying! (Go to show 04/ 13/ 10/ clip #1)  http://bit.ly/8Zs3LG For background on this, read the following http://bit.ly/bnbqUj

A video clip with Keith Olberman interviewing Nobel Prize winning economist Paul Krugman, on Obama's attempts to regulate Wall Street and the Republicans squeals on behalf of their donors http://bit.ly/a0beF4

No video here, just a simple tale of two failed terrorist plots http://bit.ly/d1pgLX Can you spot the difference?

Environmental News

Climate Science deniers will no doubt ignore this story that exonerates, again, the University of East Anglia's Climatic Research Unit http://bit.ly/9emRha To recap, there is no such thing as "climategate," except in the febrile imaginations of those spinning madly on behalf of the corporations like Exxon-Mobil. Speaking of whom, here's Phill Mickelson helping to greenwash them and their anti-science record http://bit.ly/bWLVqc

Because there can never be enough proof that climate change is happening: The warmest Jan. - March period on record just happened http://bit.ly/bxQDBY And the melting of a major Canadian Arctic ice sheet is accelerating, a new study finds http://bit.ly/d5otsZ

Finally, a story about the newly mapped Atlantic garbage patch http://bit.ly/9lFHja and Discovery's new show featuring the lying, anti-science, wolf-killer Sarah Palin, bombs! http://huff.to/djL8Tz What in hell were they thinking?

Post Beyond the Event Horizon

Submitted by Karl K on Fri, 04/09/2010 - 17:10

Het there and sorry for getting here so late today. have to do this quickly and run off to do some stand-up. It's been a while and I have rust to shake off.

Today was supposed to be more humorous than it ended up being. My guest, comedian Peter Radomski, was there to help me go over the week during the show's last hour and help me find the funny but there really wasn't a lot of funny in the Iraq video released this week by the Wikileaks people but we did have some fun at the expense of the incredibly racist Pat Buchanan http://bit.ly/cPpWC7 who was defending slavery this week on MSNBC.  (You'll find the link to the Wikileaks video on a previous post entitled Chumpsday Blogging)

Earlier in the program before Peter arrived I talked about the Chinese ship stuck and leaking oil on Australia's Great Barrier Reef and what's being done to mitigate the situation http://bit.ly/ceLTip There was also the story of Ontario taking the lead and investing 8 billion$ in green energy http://bit.ly/9Mvwah Really terrific to see a Canadian province and Premier getting out ahead on this issue

The show's early focus was on ACTA (The Anti-Conterfeiting Trade Agtreement)  http://bit.ly/c07pxh and how it will change the world's internet laws and how it is a screwjob for the world's poorer countrieshttp://bit.ly/9hd1Ri Combine that with the pro-corporate ruling on net-nuetrality http://huff.to/aWHtSZ and the UK's new and draconianian rules called the Digital Economy bill http://bit.ly/9Cunss and it's been an all around crappy last couple of weeks for internet freedom.

An important story I didn't have time for but must blog is about GWB the lesser knowing full well Guantanamo Detainees were innocent but feared that releasing them would harm the push for war in Iraq and the broader War on Terror http://bit.ly/ctNOof

FUX is nothing if not inconsistent http://bit.ly/a9r9Qa I like to think of them as nothing. Here's a great example of them trying to get out in front of a story and politicizing it and gettting caught http://bit.ly/bUuxs5 And here's a case of a former Bush official agreeing with me about the teaparty people http://bit.ly/cRZlBX

An important story I couldn't get to about climate change and drought in China http://bit.ly/9kG4nE

That's it for now. Have a great weekend!

Hey there, and welcome back!

Did a very wonky but interesting science story today that asks if our universe is located within the interior of a wormhole which itself is part of a black hole that lies within a much larger universe? Hence the title of today's posting. Go check it out and be amazed http://bit.ly/9p7gZm When I need good news or just a respite from bad news I generally head over to the many science sites that are on-line and free and do a little reading. I found this piece here  http://www.sciencedaily.com/ at one of those terrific places.

On to Canadian news of note, beginning with our PM trying to rip Hamid Karzai a "new one" five days after it.

Canadian News and Links

Hello there, and thanks for showing up. I promise to make it worth your while.
Starting with Canadian news - not that there's much of it but this 1st story is significant in that reporters are being banned from hearings on Afghan detainees http://bit.ly/9CVwve To protect Stephen Harper and the torries of course. Canadians finding all 3 parties uninspiring http://bit.ly/9OLlgg not surprising when it's hard to name what each party stands for. A roundup of opinion on latest Quebec budget http://bit.ly/bzVIeI
This is the very disturbing video of American soldiers murdering Iraqi civillians and behaving like sociopaths. Parts of the video have been played by...
And we're back after the long weekend with stories I talked about on-air today and the stories I didn't have time for so you can stay informed. Tell your friends!
Starting with Lawrence Cannon's trip to the Arctic in an attempt to assert Canadian soveriegntyhttp://bit.ly/9RSyFO
Ticking time bomb sitting atop the Great Barrier reef put there by the Chinese gov't company COSCOhttp://bit.ly/bb5E8u And since there's a liklihood that an oil spill will happen in the Arctic with increased exploration and production the Cdn. gov't has sent oil spill kits to the Arctic http://bit.ly/b7A5mB That makes it all...
this must be Bedlam!
Indeed it is as we play catch-up once again. Want to note that my interview with Gotta Laff as she prefers to be known in the blogosphere, of The Political Carnival http://www.thepoliticalcarnival.net/ will be aired tomorrow between 8:30 and 9:00 AM - Tune for fun innformative talk with one of the internet's better known bloggers! Truly a great interview with a very talented and funny person.
Like our recent shows of late, let's beging with all things Canuckistani: There's a definite movement afoot to get our taxes raised http://bit.ly/bRyjF9 And starting right here in Quebec, yesterday's Liberal budget does just that ...

Guttenfelder’s iPhone Photos of Afgan War

Associated Press photographer David Guttenfelder not only documents the war in Afghanistan with traditional digital cameras, he also used an iPhone camera, carried in his flak jacket pocket, coupled with a Polaroid film filter application to photograph the daily lives of Marines, Afghan soldiers and fellow journalists during the military offensive in Marjah, Afghanistan.

A WEEK IN REVIEW

this must be Bedlam!
Okay, catch-up blogging once again and right as we are mid-stream in giving the show a bit of a make-over. Let us know what you think of the change in tone. Truth is I could no longer afford to invest myself in the stories I cover; have to admit I take a lot of it personally. So onwards and upwards with more humor, more Canadian news (you have no idea how hard that is!) and a more neutral stance on all the crazy from south of the border.
Getting to the stories I covered on Friday and today, here are the links: Starting with Eric Cantor's idiotic claim that  Democrats were exploiting the threats they'd received from mad teabaggers during their tsunami of hate and stupidiity following the health care vote http://bit.ly/diIoFc Even...
Hey there! Wanted to post the link to Russell King's rant with all it's wonderful sources ASAP this A.M. and remind you I'm interviewing Laffy from The Political Carnival today and will play the interview on tomorrow's show, so go here right now http://www.thepoliticalcarnival.net/ and check out one of the blogosphere's better and more reliable blogs. Always great videos, commmentary and links to the day's most important stories.
Okay, here's the link http://bit.ly/bwzYyI to that very righteous rant by Russell King and what makes this valuable is that every last assertion is sourced and linked for you so you can forever have this compendium of links to tales of right wing...
Okay, back again with 2 days of stories and blogging links, and there are so many about the hateful rhetoric coming from the right over the recently passed healthcare bill that it behooves me to start there with "The End of America as You Know it!" http://bit.ly/cHcaip Brought to America by the "Socialist Party"http://bit.ly/c6ANoT And by the by, here's what the teaparty knows about taxes and "stuff"http://digg.com/d31M3Yn?t Here's what they know about democracy Death threats for Rep.'s familieshttp://bit.ly/cJhc9A More deathh threats here http://bit.ly/di3TFL Ahhhh, is there...
Never ask what my titles mean - that would e silly! So it's Monday, the American heathcare bill passed in Congress last night and I decided there were so many linksto post for the stories we covered during today's show that I didn't want to be doing any catch-up blogging.
Starting with the Torries continuous stonewalling on the Afghan detainee issue http://bit.ly/b5DaEp
And then it was on to the healthcare reform bill and the crazy opposition to it - Not that you couldn't be opposed and not crazy, just that all those opposed used extremist language and tactics to try and defeat it starting with the mental cases at the FUX network http://mediamatters.org/columns/...
